Record vs. NIU: First meeting
-- Bennett is looking to improve upon a 7-11 record NIU has against intrastate opponents since the 2010-11 season. NIU's last winning season against Illinois opponents came in 2009-10, when the Huskies were 5-3 under the previous regime, and it's the only one NIU has had in the last five years.
-- The two teams have met 13 times and NIU holds a narrow 7-6 lead. Bradley won the last meeting 50-45 on Nov. 23, 2011 in DeKalb. NIU erased an 11-point deficit in the second half to claim a two-point lead with 1:46 left but did not hang on for the win. The Huskies enter this contest after a tough 59-58 loss last Wednesday in their home opener against South Dakota State. Bradley heads into this game after a 1-1 showing at the NAU Thanksgiving Classic. The Braves lost 74-69 to Tulane on Friday and bounced back for a 95-83 win over host Northern Arizona on Saturday.
NIU continues its 56th season with its 14th meeting against Bradley. The teams last met on Nov. 23, 2011 in DeKalb and the Braves won 50-45.
Bradley is off to a 3-3 start and enters the game after a 95-83 win at Northern Arizona. The Braves have scored 65 or more points in four of their six games and are headed by first-year coach Michael Brooks, who served as an assistant at Bradley last year. The Braves are coming off a successful 18-16 season in 2011-12 that saw them earn their first-ever postseason home victory to advance to the second round of the Women's Basketball Invitational. This season, BU has victories over Eastern Illinois, Illinois and Northern Arizona and losses to Central Michigan, South Florida and Tulane.
Corral Nursing Left Ankle Injury
NIU's leading returning scorer Amanda Corral rolled her left ankle with 5:55 left in the first half of last Wednesday's game against South Dakota State and did not return. She will not play versus Bradley and is questionable for Friday's home game against Loyola.
NIU's Date with a Former Great
Former Huskie standout on the court Kristin Wiener (2003-07) will oppose NIU as Bradley's Director of Basketball Operations. Wiener netted 10.6 points and 5.5 rebounds per game as a Huskie. As a senior, she was a third-team All-MAC selection after averaging 15.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. She was also an honorable mention All-MAC choice as a junior, and led the Huskies in rebounding, field goal percentage and blocked shots each of her last two seasons at NIU. She ranks 14th at NIU in career scoring and rebounding.
Huskies Heating Up
In each of the last three games, NIU has shot better than 48 percent from the field and is shooting 48 percent on three-pointers. NIU currently ranks 14th in the nation in field goal percentage (47.8) and 19th in three-point percentage (40.0) -- both lead the MAC. Individually, Satavia Taylor ranks fifth in the country, and first in the MAC, in three-point percentage (60.0) and has made seven of her last nine attempts. Her 6-for-6 game against Morehead State set the NIU record for accuracy behind the arc in a game.
Huskies Playing 20th Season in NCAA Division I
Overall, the Huskies are 428-449 (.488) in 20 seasons of Division I play. NIU has been to the NCAA Tournament five times (1989-90, 1991-92, 1992-93, 1993-94, 1994-95).
Huskies have 2-1 Showing in Preseason WNIT
In their second-ever Preseason WNIT appearance, the Huskies fell at Iowa in the first round but rebounded strong in the consolation rounds. NIU beat Davidson 64-61 and then cruised past Morehead State 76-46 for a 2-1 record to start the season -- the third 2-1 start for Bennett in three years as NIU head coach.
Percent of Production Returning
Overall, the 2012-13 Huskies will return over 60 percent of their points and rebounds, which is nearly the opposite of what NIU had returning for the 2011-12 season.
Building on Bennett's Year 2 Success
Entering Year 3 of the Kathi Bennett era, the 300-win coach has the NIU women's basketball program pointed in the right direction. The Huskies tallied two wins in the 2012 Mid-American Conference Tournament for the first time since 2007. Last season, the Huskies posted a 14-17 overall record, 6-10 in MAC play, with a team full of underclassmen that can build on the experience, especially after closing the season winning eight of the last 14 contests.
Bennett Extended through the 2017 Season
On Aug. 22, 2012, NIU Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics Jeff Compher announced a contract extension through the 2017 season for Bennett. In her first season in 2010-11, Bennett went 13-17 (7-9 MAC) to improve the win total by 30 percent overall, 75 percent in conference, from the 2009-10 team that she inherited. In her second season, she pushed the 2011-12 Huskies to one win better (14-17, 6-10 MAC) than her first year and made a splash in the MAC Tournament with a youthful roster full of nine underclassmen.
NIU Picked to Finish 4th in the MAC West
The Mid-American Conference coaches and media chose the Huskies to finish fourth in the MAC West Division for the second straight year in the MAC Preseason Poll.
