DEKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois University women's basketball team returns home to face UIC Saturday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader at the Convocation Center.
Both teams come into Saturday's contest looking to bounce back from a tough loss. The Huskies (3-7) fell to DePaul, 83-70, Thursday night at McGrath Arena, while across town the Flames lost their first game of the season, 72-60, to Cal-Poly at the UIC Pavilion. With a 5-1 record to start the 2008-09 season, UIC is off to one of its best starts in school history. While the Huskies came up short against DePaul, NIU head coach Carol Owens was pleased with her team's effort.
"We made progress against DePaul," Owens said. "We were aggressive. The only stat that got us was our shooting percentage. They shot a little bit better than we did. We had some wide open shots, especially early on, we just didn't make them
"We did some different things that brought up our intensity, defensively. I was really pleased with that."
Northern Illinois owns a 24-13 advantage in the all-time series. However, the two teams have split the last four meetings, with both teams holding serve at home. UIC (5-1) has won the last two meetings, both at the UIC Pavilion. The Huskies won the last meeting at the Convo, 51-40, Dec. 2, 2005 and are 14-3 against the Flames in DeKalb.
UIC scored a 50-42 victory when these two teams met Nov. 25, 2007 at the UIC Pavilion. Shari' Welton (Calumet City, Ill./Thornwood) led all scorers with 14 points, going 6-14 from the field and grabbing a team-high nine rebounds. Kylie York (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) also finished in double figures, adding 10 points, while Mauvolyene Adams (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) scored eight points and grabbed six boards. UIC's Jessica Miller led the way for the Flames with 13 points.
