RIO VERDE, Ariz. -Northern Illinois University women's golfer Sydney Brickey leads the field after the first round of play at the 12th Annual Rio Verde Invitational Friday.
"We give her a certain goal for each round and it keeps her mind focused on that and nothing else," said NIU head coach Kim Kester of Brickey. "Today we wanted to see four birdies out of her and she went after it."
The Burtchville, Mich. native fired an even par 71, a career low for the freshman, pacing the Huskies who are in seventh place after shooting a 304. Brickey's score is tied for the fifth-lowest in school history, while the 304 is the ninth-lowest team score in an 18-hole round. NIU is just six shots behind leader Montana (298).
The Huskies lead fellow Mid-American Conference schools Akron (306), Toledo (308), Bowling Green (309) and Ohio (314) as well as local rivals Bradley (315) and Illinois State (315).
Brickey was three under par through 12 holes, but a bogey, a double bogey and bogey put her at one over heading into the final three holes. She rallied with a par on hole 13, a birdie on 14 and par on 15 to close out her round. The Shattuck-St. Mary's product recorded four birdies on the day and 11 pars.
"I told her tomorrow is just another round for her," Kester said. "Just play it as another round, go out and have fun."
Senior Jenny Niemiec (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) is in 28th after carding a 77. Sophomore Connie Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) and freshman Lena Gautier (LaCelle Saint Cloud, France/Creteil) are in 40th after shooting a 78.
Sophomore Samantha Coyne (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) is in 65th after shooting a first round 80 and rounds out the Huskie competitors.
Brickey and the Huskies resume play at Quail Run Golf Course at Rio Verde Country Club tomorrow morning with a 9 a.m. CT shotgun start. Fans can follow all the action live on golfstat.com with live three-hole scoring.
