RIO VERDE, Ariz. -The Northern Illinois University women's golf team fell three spots to 10th after posting a 323 in the second round of play at the 12th Annual Rio Verde Invitational Saturday.
The Huskies have a two-round total of 627 and lead fellow Mid-American Conference school Akron (640) and in-state foes Bradley (630) and Illinois State (642). Xavier leads all 18 teams with a 601, while six individuals lead with a two-round score of 148.
Senior Jenny Niemiec (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) climbed three spots to 25th shooting a second-round 77 for a two-day total of 154. Sophomore Connie Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire), who started the day in 40th, made the biggest jump of the day. Ellett is in 27th after carding a second-round 77 with a two-day total of 155.
"Jenny and Connie played well today," said NIU head coach Kim Kester. "[Connie] was playing well this weekend. She had a bit of a hiccup on the par three, fourth hole. She's continuing to play well this spring."
Freshman Sydney Brickey (Burtchville, Mich./ Shattuck-St. Mary's), who was leading after the first round of play, was unable to duplicate her even par 71 of yesterday. Brickey carded an 85 and is in 31st with a 156, eight shots out of first place.
"It was an unfamiliar position for Sydney to be in today," Kester said. "She never led a tournament before. We knew her score was going to be a little bit higher just because of the experience factor."
Freshman Lena Gautier (LaCelle Saint Cloud, France/Creteil) is 66th with a two-day total of 162 (78-84), while sophomore Samantha Coyne (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) is 77th with a 165 (80-85).
The Huskies wrap up play at Quail Run Golf Course at Rio Verde Country Club tomorrow morning with a 9 a.m. CT shotgun start. Fans can follow all the action live on golfstat.com with live three-hole scoring.
