RIO VERDE, Ariz. - The Northern Illinois University women's golf team is in 11th place after the first round of play at the 2013 Rio Verde Invitational hosted by Western Michigan.

NIU posted a 307, one shot out of 10th place Western Michigan and 19 strokes behind Northern Arizona, which leads the field with a 288. The Huskies lead fellow Mid-American Conference foes Ohio (318) and Akron (321) which sit at 16th and 17th respectively. Eastern Michigan is second with a 295, Ball State and Toledo are tied for third after carding a 300, and Bowling Green is fifth after shooting a 303.

"I'm very pleased with our performance today," said NIU head coach Kim Kester. "The 307 is our lowest round of the year and it's the first time all year we've the four scores we counted were in the 70s. Overall, it was a great day for us. Everybody played well.

"Allie played strong again and Jenny did extremely well. Taylor and Connie each finished strong."

Senior Allie Parthie (Marinette, Wis./Marinette) leads the way for the Huskies. She's tied for 11th after posting a first round 74 and trails Stephanie Kim of Northern Arizona by four strokes. Connie Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) and Jenny Niemiec (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) are tied for 35th after scoring a 77.

Taylor Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire), who shot a 79, and Casey LaBarbera (Marinette, Wis./Marinette), who posted an 84, sit in 56th and 84th respectively and round out the Huskie competitors.
