Three Huskies in Top-10 After Day One at NIU Snowbird

TAMPA, Fla. - Northern Illinois women's golfer Jessica Parmenter missed the 2009 fall season with injury. Huskie head coach Pam Tyksa couldn't be happier to have the junior back on the course, as Parmenter shot an opening round 78 and is in sixth place after day one at the NIU Snowbird Intercollegiate at Pebble Creek Golf and Country Club. "I'm proud of Jessica to shoot as low as she did after battling back from injury," Tyska said. "Now she's got to focus on improving on that performance for tomorrow." As a team, Northern Illinois shot a 328, just 11 strokes back of tournament leading Methodist. Youngstown State is in second, followed by Loyola, Indiana State, and Western New Mexico in the 13-team event. "It's very exciting because the top six schools are within 11 strokes of each other," Tyska said. Behind Parmenter, Kim Hunley and Kim Bailey are tied for eighth place after shooting 80 over the first 18 holes of the spring season. "Kim Hunley and Kim Bailey both played well, but left some shots on the golf course," Tyska said. "They can improve tomorrow and have a chance at a very high finish in this tournament." The competition is the first for the Huskies since mid-October, when NIU was forced to withdraw from the Mid-American Conference Fall Preview due to injuries. "We're just getting settled back into our, but we are so appreciative to be in the sunshine, to see grass, to actually hit shots and see 250 yards of ball flight," Tyska said. Michelle Caporusso rounded out the Huskie scorers with a first-round 90, and Mandi Vavrinchik carded a 92 on the day. Tee times for Thursdays action start at 7 a.m. (CST).
