LAS VEGAS - The Northern Illinois University women's golf team sits in the top 10 after first round play at the Lady Bison Spring Classic at Palute Golf Club Thursday.

NIU scored a 320, two shots out of eighth place Bucknell and 24 strokes behind leader Nova Southeastern (296). The Huskies lead Western Illinois (323), Creighton (324), North Dakota (330) and Idaho State (336).

"We did okay, a little higher that our last tournament," said NIU head coach Kim Kester. "We're giving away shots we know we shouldn't be giving away. We're just looking to improve tomorrow.

"We have an earlier start time tomorrow. The morning teams had a little bit more of an advantage not playing in the wind as we had playing in the wind that picked up in the afternoon."

Senior Allie Parthie (Marinette, Wis./Marinette) is tied for seventh with a team best first round 75. Taylor Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) is in 34th with an 80, while her sister Connie Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) is 44th after carding an 82.
