NIU Golf Team Continues to Improve on Spring Trip

TAMPA, Fla. - The Northern Illinois University women's golf team is seventh after the first round of play at the 26th Annual Snowbird Intercollegiate at Pebble Creek Golf Club Thursday.

The Huskies fired a first round 331 and have two golfers in the top 20 after the first day of play. Junior Allie Parthie (Marinette, Wis./Marinette) leads the way for the Huskies, firing a first round 78 and sits in 11th, sixth shots off the lead. Kelsie Passolt (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) has improved in her second tournament of the season, shooting an 81. Passolt trimmed six strokes off her front nine score, shooting a 36 on the back nine.

"Kelsie has consistently improved the whole trip," NIU head coach Pam Tyska said. "She played really solid today. She's very confident. Her swing is good, and her decisions are good. Tomorrow, I think, is going to be even better for her."

Jenny Niemiec (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East), who made the starting line up by virtue of her performance at the Don Benbow Invitational, is in 33rd place after shooting an 84. Freshman Casey LaBarbera (Marinette, Wis./Marinette) is in 43rd after carding an 88, while Carissa Burdi (Carol Stream, Ill./Bartlett) rounds out the Huskie team scores, turning in an 89 for 46th place.

Senior Katie Kuhn (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Hinsdale) leads NIU's individual players, shooting an 85 to place 36th. Jill Saiki (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) is in 48th after shooting 91. Freshmen Taylor Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) and Allison Van Heuklom (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) are tied for 55th after shooting a 97.

McKayla Anderson of McNeese State leads the field after shooting a 72. McNeese leads the other 10 teams after shooting a 310. Florida Gulf Coast is one shot out of first with a 311, and Chicago State is in third with a 314. Southern Illinois (316) is in fourth and Laval (329) is fifth.
