DUNNELLON, Fla. - The Northern Illinois University women's golf team sits in 14th after the first round of play at Morehead State's 2014 Ocala Spring Invitational at the Juliette Falls Golf Course Sunday.

"We didn't do a good job of hitting fairways today," said NIU head coach Kim Kester. "We put ourselves in tougher situations than we needed to be in.

"They weren't too happy with how they performed today. They worked on what they needed to and they're ready to go for tomorrow. That's what you want to see. We didn't shoot ourselves in the foot by any means, but we have a little bit of work to do."

The Huskies fired a 314 with Connie Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) and Lena Gautier (LaCelle Saint Cloud, France/Creteil) leading the way for NIU. The pair each carded a 76 in their first round of play and are in 26th.

"Lena started out a couple under par through the first six holes," Kester said. "Lena had an up and down round, but she managed it pretty well. Connie just stayed consistent like she always does. She hit some pretty good shots out there. When she got in trouble, she got herself out of trouble."

Casey LaBarbera (Marinette, Wis./Marinette) scored an 80 and puts her in 64th in her first tournament of the spring, while freshman Sydney Brickey's (Burtchville, Mich./Shattuck-St. Mary's) 82 places her in 75th.

Jenny Niemiec (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) rounds out the Huskie competitors. The NIU senior shot an 86 and is in 84th.

Daytona State College leads all 16 teams with a 295, while Tiffany Chan of DSC leads the field after shooting a 67, five strokes under par. Toledo leads all four Mid-American Conference schools with a 303, good enough for sixth place. Ohio is in ninth with a 306, while Akron's 308 places the Zips in 11th.

NIU returns to the course tomorrow for second round play in the MSU Ocala Spring Invitational. Tee times are set for 7 a.m. Central Time.
