Round 2 Results
DUNNELLON, Fla. - The Northern Illinois University women's golf team moved up a spot to 13th after the second round of play at Morehead State's 2014 Ocala Spring Invitational at the Juliette Falls Golf Course Monday.
The Huskies moved trimmed four strokes off its first round score, shooting a 310 for a two-round total of a 624. Daytona State College leads the 16-team field with a 593, while the Lady Falcon's Tiffany Chan leads all individuals with a 135.
Connie Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) leads the way for NIU with a 151 after shooting a second round 75. The Huskie sophomore moved up 11 spots with that performance and is in 15th. Lena Gautier (LaCelle Saint Cloud, France/Creteil) climbed five spots to 21st after posting a second round 76 for a two-day total of 152.
Freshman Sydney Brickey (Burtchville, Mich./Shattuck-St. Mary's) made the biggest jump on the day after cutting five strokes off her first round score. Brickey, who began the day in 75th, shot a second round 77 and is now in 56th with a 159.
"Sydney closed out her last three holes," said NIU head coach Kim Kester. "She was two under in those last three holes. That was good for her."
Casey LaBarbera (Marinette, Wis./Marinette) is in 72nd after posting a two-day total of 164 (80-84), while Jenny Niemiec (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East), who cut four strokes off her first round score, is in 84th a 168 (86-82).
Toledo leads all four Mid-American Conference schools with a 604, good enough for fifth place. Ohio is in ninth with a 614, while Akron's 620 places the Zips in 11th.
"We're only a couple shots here or there out of a top-10 performance," Kester said. "Top-10 would great, just to keep improving every tournament."
NIU returns to the course tomorrow for second round play in the MSU Ocala Spring Invitational. Tee times are set for 7:15 a.m. Central Time.
