DEKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois University women's golf team battled the elements and its opponents to place fifth after the first round of play at the Delores Black Falcon Invitational hosted by Bowling Green University Saturday.

"The course played tough today," said NIU head coach Kim Kester. "I thought Connie did well in this weather. We're hoping to improve tomorrow.

The Huskies, who were playing in wind, rain and sleet, shot a 330 at Stone Ridge Golf Club and trail leaders Bowling Green and Detroit by eight strokes. Bowling Green's Amy Ruthenberg and Detroit's Olivia Richards lead the field with a 77.

Connie Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) leads the way for the Huskies, shooting a first round 81 to tie for 11th. Allie Parthie (Marinette, Wis./Marinette) is in 15th after shooting an 82, while Jenny Niemiec (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) is tied for 25th with an 83.

Casey LaBarbara is tied for 32nd with an 84 and Taylor Ellett rounds out the Huskie team scorers with a 91 and is in 75th place. Natalya Schleebs (Naperville, Ill./Matea), who is competing as an individual, shot an 89 and is in 62nd place.

The Huskies return for final round play tomorrow morning. Tee time is set for 8 a.m. Central Time.
