BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Northern Illinois University women's golf team climbed three spots up the leaderboard in the final round of play to finish sixth at the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational at Stone Ridge Golf Club Sunday.

In the final tune up before the 2014 Mid-American Conference Championships, NIU was one of only three schools in the field to post a lower score in the final round despite extremely windy conditions. NIU scored a 322 on day two to finish the tournament with a 645. The Huskies were one shot out of fifth place and 17 strokes behind winner Ball State (628), which shot a final round 324. Bowling Green's Lily Bartel won the event with a 151 (76-75).

"We had the second low round of the day," said NIU head coach Kim Kester. "Overall, that's good to see. Yesterday our round set us back. They fought all the way through. It was tough today with the wind. We contained the weather as best we could."

The Huskies had two golfers finish in the top 20 as sophomore Samantha Coyne (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) jumped nine spots to finish 12th, while Freshman Sydney Brickey (Burtchville, Mich./Shattuck-St. Mary's) moved up 19 places to finish 15th. Both shot a final round 79 as Coyne, who had an eagle on her second to last hole, finished the tournament with a 158 and Brickey with a 160.

"Sam did extremely well in these conditions, very consistent," Kester said. "That's what we like to see. You know if you're playing consistent, you're always going to shoot around that same number. She finished it out strong today."

Sophomore Connie Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) held on to 21st after finishing the event with a 162 (79-83). Freshman Lena Gautier (La Celle Saint Cloud, France/Creteil) climbed nine places with a final round 83 to finish with a 167.

The fifth and final competitor for NIU, senior Jenny Niemiec (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) trimmed six strokes off her first round score to move up 18 spots to 55th after carding a 168 (87-81).

The Huskies return to the course Friday, April 25 when NIU travels to Fishers, Ind. to compete in the 2014 MAC Women's Golf Championships at The Hawthornes Golf Club.
