Round 3 Results
DEKALB, Ill.- The Northern Illinois University women's golf team was unable to gain ground but still held on to the eighth spot after the third round of play at the 2009 Mid-American Conference Championships at Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio Saturday.
"Everybody is hitting some spectacular shots and staying on task," NIU head coach Pam Tyska said. "It's exhausting, certainly physically, because it's a tough golf course to walk, but mentally too. You have to challenge yourself to stay on task. I'm confident were set up for a most improved finish for the final round."
Kim Hunley (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) is tied for 31st after shooting an 84 in the third round and has a three-round total of 257. Mandi Vavrinchik (Elmhurst, Ill./York) moved up two spots to 34th (259) after posting an 83 in the third round.
Kelsie Passolt (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) and Ashley Lods (Monticello, Ind./Twin Lakes) are tied for 35th, shooting a 262 for the tournament. Passolt shot an 83 in the third round, while Lods shot an 88 today and is the lone Huskie to post scores in the 80s in all three rounds of competition. Michelle Caporusso (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) rounds out NIU's competitors. She sits in 41st place after posting a 91 Saturday, and has a three-round total of 268.
The Huskies shot a 368 in the third round for tournament total of 1036 and are 29 strokes behind seventh-place Ohio. Kent State leads the field with a three-round total of 925. Kent State's Mercedes Germino maintained her lead after posting a 228 (73-75-80). Teammate and last year's champion, Kirby Dreher, is two strokes behind with a 230 (79-76-75).
The 2009 MAC Women's Golf Championships conclude tomorrow with the first NIU golfer, Caporusso, teeing off at 6:45 a.m. CST.
