FISHERS, Ind. - The Northern Illinois University women's golf team sits in fourth place after the first round of play at the 2014 Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championships at The Hawthorns Golf & Country Club Friday.
NIU battled some challenging weather conditions to finish the day with a 314, and trails third-place Akron by one stroke and is 12 strokes out of second. Perennial power Kent State leads the field with a 296. Stephanie St.-Jean of Toledo and Kent State's Wad Phaewchimplee lead the individuals with a 72.
"We started out playing in a lot of rain, but it eventually stopped raining and got windy," said NIU head coach Kim Kester. "The morning tee time was definitely nicer because we beat the wind. The downside was we played in rain.
"It was a great day. The girls definitely had the right mindset. They don't mind playing in the rain. Most of them actually enjoy it."
Freshman Lena Gautier (La Celle Saint Cloud, France/Creteil) is the lone Huskie in the top 10. Gautier carded a four-over 76 in the first round of her first MAC Championships.
Freshman Sydney Brickey (Burtchville, Mich./Shattuck-St. Mary's) and sophomore Samantha Coyne (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett), who are also playing in their first league championships are tied for 18th after scoring a first round 79.
Senior Jenny Niemiec (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) is in 23rd with an 80, while sophomore Connie Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) sits in 26th after scoring an 81.
"All of them across the board, it was good to see them play consistent," Kester said. "They all saw some things they wanted to get better at for tomorrow. They see the course is scoreable. They know it's a tough course, but they've seen it a few times and they know where to be."
NIU's tee time for the second round of play is set for 7:50 a.m. CT with Ellett taking the course first. The Huskies will be playing with Eastern Michigan and Ohio. Fans can follow all the action live with three-hole scoring on BirdieFire.com.
