NASHPORT, Ohio - The Northern Illinois University women's golf team is tied for sixth after the first round of play at the 2013 Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championships at Longaberger Golf Course Friday.

"The first 12 holes were beyond outstanding," said NIU head coach Kim Kester. "We were in second or third place for a long time today. The last four holes got us. Overall it was an okay day. It was fun to watch the first half of the day. We almost couldn't do much wrong."

NIU shot a first round 324 and is tied with Western Michigan, 16 shots behind leader Kent State. Ball State is second with a 308 and Toledo is third after scoring a 312. Eastern Michigan is fourth and Akron fifth with a 318 and 321 respectively. Bowling Green (327) is in eighth and Ohio (343) is ninth.

Casey LaBarbara (Marinette, Wis./Marinette) leads the way for the Huskies, shooting an opening round 79. She is one of five golfers tied for 14th, seven shots behind leader Jenna Hague of Ball State.

"Casey did exceptionally well," Kester said. "It was good to see her play the way she did. On whole four she gained a little momentum. She drained a long putt for birdie. That was good to see."

Connie Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) and Jenny Niemiec (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) are tied for 23rd after carding an 81, while Allie Parthie (Marinette, Wis./Marinette) is in 31st with an 83. Taylor Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) rounds out the Huskie competitors placing 45th after scoring a 91.

The Huskies return to the course Saturday for second round play at the 2013 MAC Championships. The first Huskie will tee off at 6:50 CT. NIU will be playing with Ohio and Bowling Green.
