NIU Women's Golf Takes Ninth at Cardinal Classic

MUNCIE, Ind.-The Northern Illinois University women's golf team finished tied for ninth place after shooting a 633 (319-314) at the Cardinal Classic hosted by Ball State Tuesday.

Kim Hunley (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) moved up four spots to 14th after turning in a second-round 76, finishing the tournament with a 153. Michelle Caporusso (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) shot up the leaderboard climbing from 60th to 37th after turning in a 74 in the second round of play. It was the sophomore's career-low at NIU and a team low for the fall. She finished with a two-round total 158.

"We played better today," NIU head coach Pam Tyska. "Kim Hunley played really well. She had a really solid tournament. I'm really proud of Michelle Caporusso with her NIU career best and the team-low of the season. She certainly put her best effort forward. We definitely have the talent. We've just got to get in firing at the same time."

Freshman Kelsie Passolt (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) slipped to 54th after scoring a second round 85, finishing with a 163 for the tournament. Ashley Lods (Monticello, Ind./Twin Lakes) moved up to 57th after posting a second-round 79, while Nicci Schultz (Somonauk, Ill/Somonauk) fell to 64th after posting a second round 86, finishing the tournament with a 166.

Ball State took the tournament with a 594 and Akron took second with a 601. MAC foes Ohio and Bowling Green took seventh and 11th respectively. The Bobcats finished with a 626, while the Falcons finished three shots behind the Huskies.

Northern Illinois will complete the fall portion of its schedule Oct. 5-6 when NIU plays host to the Huskie Classic at Whisper Creek in Huntley, Ill. Tee time for Sunday and Monday is set for 8 a.m.
