EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The Northern Illinois University women's golf team is in fifth place after the first round of play at the SIUE Intercollegiate presented by Double Tree hosted by SIU-Edwardsville.

"We had a horrendous putting day," said NIU head coach Pam Tyska. "There are so many little nuances of these greens and we didn't capitalize on any. The errant shots that some of us had were inopportunely timed to also coincide with going into hazards and out of bounds. We had a lot of penalty strokes we need to alleviate tomorrow.

"We've got our work cutout for us tomorrow. We're going to do a little damage control and stay away from those big numbers. Hopefully we'll climb up the leader board tomorrow."

The Huskies shot a 344 and are just seven shots out of second place. Southern Illinois leads the field after posting a 311, while host SIU-Edwardsville and Eastern Illinois are both tied for second after scoring a 337. Austin Peay State is just ahead of NIU in fourth with a 338.

Junior Allie Parthie (Marinette, Wis./Marinette) continues to carry the flag for Northern Illinois. She is tied for seventh after shooting an 82, while Taylor Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) is also in the top 20, placing 16th after scoring an 85.
