Huskies Jump Three Spots at Cardinal Classic

YORKTOWN, Ind. - Senior Kim Bailey shot a career low 74, helping the Northern Illinois women's golf team on a charge past three teams to finish in ninth place in the Ball State Cardinal Class, Tuesday.

Bailey improved her day one performance by eight strokes to play the best round of her four-year NIU career. Bailey's 74 was tied for the ninth-lowest score of the day, and she finished in a tie for 31st.

As a team NIU improved 10 strokes from day one, carding a 305 for a two-round tournament total of 620.

"We shaved 10 shots off of our first round score, and we had the fifth lowest score of the day," Tyska said.

Michelle Caporusso led the way with a total score of 153, bolstering an opening day 78 with a three-over 75 in round two. Caporusso tied for 20th out of 79 competitors.

Sophomores Allie Parthie and Kelsie Passolt also carded back-to-back rounds in the 70s. Parthie tied for 25th with a two-round score of 155 (76-79). Passolt carded a 77 on day two, paired with a 79 on the opening 18 to tie with Bailey for 31st.

Katie Kuhn improved her play three strokes from round one to round two, finishing with a 171 (87-84). Playing as an individual, Mandi Vavrinchick shot 167 (84-83) to tie for 69th.

"Across the board, they shaved anywhere from one to eight strokes off their first round," Tyska said. "That's how it needs to be done to move us up the leaderboard."

One interesting note from the tournament, Ohio's Meryl Weaver tallied a hole in one on hole No. 7, a par 3 which played at 131 yards. Weaver tied for fourth at the event.

Northern Illinois returns to play Oct. 10-11 for the Huskie Classic, played at Whisper Creek in Huntley, Ill.
