Freshman Jessica Parmenter leads after first round of play



Senior Abbie Many is tied for third

DeKALB, Ill.-- The Northern Illinois University women's golf team has a four-stroke lead over Oakland University after the first round of the 23rd Annual Huskie Classic at Whisper Creek in Huntley, Ill. Monday.

Jessica Parmenter (Peoria, Ill./Peoria Christian) continues to excel in her first season of collegiate golf. Parmenter, a freshman, is tied for the lead with Oakland's Nicole Swan, shooting a first-round 74. Senior Annie Many (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) is a stroke off the lead after shooting a 75. She's tied for third with Oakland's Jenna Goulet and teammate Devon Hartneck (Rochester, Minn./Lincoln), who is playing as an individual.

"Jessica Parmenter played as solid as she ever has since coming to college," said NIU head coach Pam Tyska. "She made great decisions. She had solid shot making. When she did miss the green she was able to get up and down and score well. Abbie Many, the same thing. She played really smart. I wouldn't say it was her best ball-striking day but she got up and down and put up a great score. I'm really pleased with everybody."

NIU sophomore Kim Hunley (Aurora, Ill./ West Aurora) and Nicci Schulz (Somonauk, Ill./Somonauk), who is playing as an individual, round out the top 10. Hunley is tied for eighth with a first-round 78, while Schultz posted a 79. Loyola University is in third after posting a 318, followed by Detroit (325), Western Illinois (328) and Wisconsin-Green Bay (384).

Final round action at Whisper Creek will begin Tuesday with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
