FISHERS, Ind. - The Northern Illinois University women's golf team is in 10th place after the first round of The 2013 Preview at The Hawthorns Golf Club Monday.

Sophomore Samantha Coyne (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) leads the way for the Huskies, which shot a first round 330. Coyne shot a 79 in her first look at the course that will host the 2014 Mid-American Conference Championships in April. Toledo leads the field with a 304, while Ball State's Jenna Hague is the individual leader after carding a 72.

"It was good to see Sam come in with a 79," said NIU head coach Kim Kester. "Conditions were a little tougher today. The aerated the greens two weeks ago, so the greens were a little bumpier than you would have liked to see. It played tough, but there were still holes we could've scored on.

"We just need to get everyone going at once. We're not all on the same page yet, but they're moving in the right direction. They managed the course pretty well."

Senior Jenny Niemiec (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) is tied for 32nd with a first round 82, while sophomore Connie Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) is 51st after posting an 84. Freshman Sydney Brickey (Burtchville, Mich./Shattuck-St. Mary's) is in 58th after shooting an 85 and junior Taylor Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) rounds out the Huskie team scores with a 90 to put her in 84.

Casey LaBarbera (Marinette, Wis./Marinette), who was playing as an individual, fired a first round 82 and is in 32nd.

"We need to stay away from the big numbers," Kester said is the key to moving up the leaderboard tomorrow. "We had a few of those today. We have to stay away from big numbers and if we do that, we'll be good."

Tee time for final round play at The 2013 Preview is set for 8:30 a.m. CT.
