FISHERS, Ind. - The Northern Illinois University women's golf team improved its play in the final round but was unable to improve its position finishing 14th at The Preview at Hawthorns Golf & Country Club in Fishers, Ind. Tuesday.
The Huskies trimmed 19 strokes of their first round 362 to finish the tournament with a 705. Toledo won the event by virtue of a playoff with Akron, posting a 621. Ryann Gilley of Southern Illinois won the event with a 149 (73-76).
"It's unfortunate we had to use a competitive experience to learn both life and golf lessons," said NIU head coach Pam Tyska. "In a way, for it to happen in the fall when we're still making some line up and roster changes, it's a good thing to happen. We learned about ourselves. It's certainly easy to stay in a hole and feel sorry for yourself, but we didn't do that."
Freshman Allison Van Heuklom (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) saw the biggest improvement, cutting 10 strokes off her first round score, shooting an 86 and finishing in 84th. Casey LaBarbera (Marinette, Wis./Marinette), Kelsie Passolt (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) and Katie Kuhn (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Hinsdale) all trimmed five strokes off their first round total. LaBarbera finished 78th with a 175 (90-85), Passolt was 81st with a 179 (92-87) and Kuhn's final round 89 put her in 85th with a two-day total of 183.
Junior Allie Parthie (Marinette, Wis./Marinette) was tied for 72nd after carding a second round 85, finishing the tournament with a 171. Taylor Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire), who was playing as an individual, posted an 85 in the final round and was the highest-placing Huskie. She tied for 68th with a 170.
The Huskies open their spring campaign in Jacksonville, Fla. when NIU competes in the Don Benbow Invitational. First round play begins March 12, 2012.
