2014 MAC Match Play Central

LAKEWOOD, Fla. –The seventh seed Northern Illinois University women’s golf team split a pair of matches at the 2014 MAC Match Play at Lakewood Ranch Country Club in Lakewood, Fla.

The Huskies suffered a 3-and-1 setback to No. 2 seed Bowling Green in their first match before defeating No. 4 seed Ohio, 4-and-1, in the nightcap.

Connie Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) turned in a solid effort to rally from a four-hole deficit through seven to defeat Bowling Green’s Bailey Arnold 1-up in her first match of the day. Ellett slowly chipped away at the lead, winning holes eight through 12 to square the match. Arnold went 1-up after taking 14, however, Ellett won 17 and held on 18 to win the match.

“Connie came back which was great. It was good to see her play like that,” said NIU head coach Kim Kester. “If you’re going to have a player down, Connie’s the one you want down because you know she’s going to bring you back. She brought it back and played extremely well.”

Senior Jenny Niemiec (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) and Bowling Green’s Hannah Lewis tied in their match. After going down one after the opening hole, Niemiec went up two through five, but Lewis tied the match in the succeeding three holes and went up a hole after 11. Niemiec squared the match on the 12th hole and had a one-hole lead heading into 18. However, Lewis took 18 to tie the match.

With one match under their belt the Huskies knocked off the Bobcats in dominating fashion. Freshmen Lena Gautier (La Celle Saint Cloud, France/Creteil) and Sydney Brickey (Burtchville, Mich./Shattuck-St. Mary’s) posted 4-and-2 finishes as they beat Kristen Helmsdoerfer and Angela Codian respectively.

Samantha Coyne (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) took a 1-up lead after the second hole and never looked back. She built a four-hole lead through the front nine and lead by as many as six late on the back nine. She posted a 5-and-3 victory over Ohio’s Hailey Hrynewich. Ellett had a good battle with Julie Lechner. Down one after four holes, the two played a fairly even match the next nine holes with Lechner leading by one after the 13th hole. Ellett won 14th and 15th, but Lechner squared the match at 16. However, Ellett won 17th and 18th to win the match.

Niemiec suffered a 2-and-1 setback to Kara Brinkman to round out the Huskie scorers and the first day of the spring campaign for NIU. Kester was pleased with her team’s performance its first time out.

“Tee to green, we hit the ball fantastic,” Kester said. “It’s when we got on the greens where saw a few three putts that we didn’t want to see. That’s where we let a few things slip away. Overall, I saw a lot of good stuff out of the team, which is good.”

The Huskies return to the course tomorrow to face Cleveland State. Tee time is set for 8 a.m. CT.
