2014 MAC Match Play Central
LAKEWOOD, Fla. -
The seventh seed Northern Illinois University women's golf team wrapped up competition at the 2014 MAC Match Play with a victory over Cleveland State Tuesday at Lakewood Ranch Country Club in Lakewood, Fla.
"Overall, everyone played extremely well and we're happy with what we saw," said NIU head coach Kim Kester. "Everyone excelled at different parts. It was just good to see everyone playing well right out of the gates."
The Huskies posted a 3.5-and-1.5 victory over the eighth-seeded Vikings in their final match of the tournament. Jenny Niemiec (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East), Connie Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) and Lena Gautier (La Celle Saint Cloud, France/Creteil) each picked up wins in their matches. Samantha Coyne (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) tied her match, while Sydney Brickey (Burtchville, Mich./Shattuck-St. Mary's) lost her final match of the event.
"Lena did a good job at the one spot today," Kester said. "Yesterday she had a tough match against BG and bounced back to win her next two matches."
After being all squared after two holes, Niemiec pulled away in the final 16 holes to defeat Cleveland State's Colleen Miller 4-and-2. Ellett had a dominating performance in her match with Madeline Kaminski, posting an 8-and-7 win in 11 holes. Gautier won her match over Allyson Hackman, 3-and-2, in 16 holes.
Coyne tied her match with Micaela Cronin, while Brickey suffered a 2-and-1 setback to Shelly Ford. Brickey and Ford were all square after 15, but Brickey faltered at 16 and 17 to drop the match.
The Huskies return to the course Feb. 24 when NIU travels to Corpus Christi, Texas to compete in the Islander Classic. Tee time is set for 8 a.m. CT.
