DEKALB. Ill. - The Northern Illinois University women's golf team travels to Corpus Christi, Texas to compete in the 2014 Islander Classic at the Corpus Christi Country Club Monday.

Joining NIU and host Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi at the event are Bradley, Central Arkansas, Drake, Oral Roberts, Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston State, University of North Texas, Oklahoma City, McLennan, Houston Baptist, Lamar, South Dakota, Texas A&M Kingsville and Texas-Pan American.

The Huskies look to continue the spring portion of their schedule strong after a solid showing at the 2014 MAC Match Play at Lakewood Ranch Country Club in Lakewood, Fla. in the season opener. Led by the play of sophomore Connie Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire), the Huskies posted wins over Ohio and Cleveland State, while falling to Bowling Green. Ellett won all three of her matches in the tournament, including a dominating 8-and-7 victory over Cleveland State's Madeline Kaminski.

"We did fantastic at MAC Match Play," said NIU head coach Kim Kester. "The course was in good shape. It was a good course to start out the spring on, especially for Match Play. They're hitting the ball great, everyone is working hard across the board, and that's great to see."

Senior Jenny Niemiec (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East), and freshman Lena Gautier (La Celle Saint Cloud, France/Creteil) also picked up victories in the Huskies' first weekend of action. Niemiec went 1-1-1 in her three matches, while Guatier was 2-1 in her first action as a Huskie.

In addition Ellett, Niemiec and Gautier, Sydney Brickey (Burtchville, Mich./Shattuck-St. Mary's) and Samantha Coyne (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) will be competing for NIU.

The course at Corpus Christ Country Club should provide an interesting challenge for the Huskies. NIU will be playing on the Gulf Coast, which will provide for different playing conditions than in Florida.

"We'll be in southern Texas, down by the ocean," Kester said. "There's probably going to be more wind than we had in Florida. We just have to adjust to the different conditions."

The 16-team field will play two rounds on Monday, Feb. 24 and with the third and final round to be played on Tuesday, Feb. 25. Play begins with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. CT on Monday and an 8:15 am CT shotgun start on Tuesday.
