NORTHERN
ILLINOIS FINISHES IN 13TH-PLACE AT PEGGY KIRK BELL INVITATIONAL
ORLANDO, FL --- The Northern Illinois University women's golf team
continued its spring break tour of the Sunshine State with a 13th-place
finish in the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational. The Huskies scored a
694 (344-350) for the 36-hole, two-day event.
Jackie Bailey (Decatur / Warrensburg-Latham) led the NIU
youth movement with a 167 (86-81). Tuesday's 81 was the freshman's
best outing since her 81 at the Falcon Invitational last September.
"Jackie played really well today," coach Pam Tyska
stated. "She had a double and triple bogey, but fought hard
to get back and post an 81."
Junior Irish Whalen (Hanover / River Ridge), led the Huskies
in the first round with an 85, but finished the second loop at 174
(85-89). Ally Williams (Hoffman Estates / Palatine Fremd)
went into the clubhouse two strokes back of Whalen with a 176 (86-90).
The squad's lone senior Janelle Warrick (Neenah, WI) carded
a 177 (87-90) for the event. Freshman Lynzee Gumm (Galesburg)
shaved seven strokes off her first round 97 to finish at 187 (97-90).
"We had little sparks of daylight today, but we still need
to put it all together," Tyska added. "Janelle and Lynzee
had good nines, but they both had trouble on the other side that
was too much to overcome."
Penn State University won the event with a 607, beating out the
University of Memphis by one stroke. The host Rollins College finished
third. On the individual side, the University of Notre Dame's Katie
Brophy finished at 147, beating a pair of Nittany Lions, Katie Futcher
and Cynthia Skilton, by one stroke.
The Northern Illinois University women's golf team closes out its
winter training schedule when they host the Snowbird Classic. The
Snowbird gets underway on Thursday, with an 8 a.m. tee time.
