Huskies Look to Improve After First Round Experience

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Northern Illinois University women's golf team struggled in the first round of the Saluki Invitational Sunday afternoon at Hickory Ridge Golf Course.

"There were about four holes that ate us up," NIU head coach Pam Tyska said. "We did walk the course after the rain and snow subsided yesterday. To actually play it, is going to give us a big boost going into tomorrow.

"We definitely have some better strategies on how to play the golf course now that we do have a round under our belt."

The Huskies shot an opening round 343 and are 11th, one shot out of the Top 10. Southern Illinois leads the field with a 319.

Sophomore Allie Parthie (Marinetta, Wis./Marinetta) carded the best score for Northern Illinois with an 81. She is one of seven golfer tied for 10th place, nine strokes out of the lead. Junior Katie Kuhn (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Hinsdale Central) follows with an 84 and is in 31st.

Michelle Caporusso (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) is in 43rd after posting an 87, while Carissa Burdi (Carol Stream, Ill./Bartlett) and Kelsie Passolt (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) are tied for 68th after each shot a 90. Kim Bailey (Gibson City, Ill./Gibson City-Melvin Sibley) rounds out the NIU competitors with a 94.

Final round play begins tomorrow with a shotgun set for 9 a.m. Central Time.
