March 29, 2004
NIU Women's Golf Remains 12th After Final Round of SIU Saluki Invitational CARBONDALE, IL -- Consistency was the key for Northern Illinois University womens golfer Jamie Carney. After opening the 36-hole event with an 84, Carney fired a final-round 83 to finish 33rd at the 17-team SIU Saluki Invitational on Monday (March 29) in Carbondale, IL. After a strong finish to the teams Spring Break trip through Florida, Carney tied her top placing of the season (33rd) by shooting a final-round 82 at the par-72 Hickory Ridge Golf Course. That 82 also tied her best round of the spring season as she kept the Huskies in 12th place in the final team standings. The University of Michigan claimed the tournament title after carding a team score of 312 in the final round. The Wolverines were led by Laura Olin, who won individual medalist honors with a 4-over-par total of 148. Fellow sophomore Jackie Bailey was second among NIU golfers with a two-round 168 to tie for 35th, while her sister, Lisa Bailey, tied for 67th with a two-day total of 167. The most improved NIU golfer during Mondays final round was Jackie Heslop. The teams most consistent performer during the teams three events in Florida, Heslop rebounded from a disappointing 97 in the opening round to shoot 85 on Monday to finish 81st. Allison Williams finished just ahead of Heslop in 77th (91-89--180), while Irish Whalen finished 88th (91-93--184). The Northern Illinois womens golf team returns to action on April 9-10 when they travel to Champaign-Urbana to participate in the Illinois Spring Classic at the Stone Creek Golf Club in Urbana, IL.
