DEKALB, Ill. - After spending much of the spring in Florida, Arizona and Texas, the Northern Illinois University women's golf team will stay closer to home when it travels to Peoria, Ill. for the Bradley Invitational Saturday.
Joining NIU and Bradley are Butler, Evansville, UIC, Indiana State, Loyola, Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois and Western Illinois. The 54-hole event will take place at Weaver Ridge Golf Club. The 10-team field will play 36 holes on Saturday and 18 on Sunday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. each day.
With some warmer temperatures over the last few days, the Huskies have been fortunate enough to get some practice time outside.
"Most of the team is new to the course," said NIU women's golf head coach Kim Kester. "A couple of them have seen it before but haven't played it to the extent we will be playing it. It's a hilly course, but we're ready for it.
"We've played outside for the past week so we're used to the cold and frigid temps. If you're going to playing in this weather, you might as well practice in it. It's more a mental toughness thing we'll have to overcome, but we're ready."
NIU enters this tournament looking to improve from a 12th place finish at the Morehead State Ocala Spring Invitational where the Huskies shot a 939 (314-310-315). Freshman Lena Gautier (La Celle Saint Cloud, France/Creteil) and sophomore Connie Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) led the way for NIU, finishing tied for 25th with a final three round score of 230.
This weekend's trip to the Bradley Invitational will be the first for the Huskies since 2009 when NIU finished ninth with a two-round score of 667.
