ILLINOIS - FINAL-ROUND RESULTS: NIU Women's Golf Finishes Ninth At 2004 MAC Championships INDIAN SPRINGS, OH -- Inclement weather conditions kept the Northern Illinois University womens golf team from getting on track during the final round of the 2004 Mid-American Conference Womens Golf Championships. Driving rains and windy conditions drove up scores at the beginning of Sundays final round, but the Huskies did manage a strong finish to the afternoon as they capped the 2003-04 campaign with a ninth-place finish at the conference summit. While NIU failed to work its way up the final standings, the consistent performance of freshman Lisa Bailey highlighted Northern Illinois play throughout the weekend. A native of Decatur, IL, Bailey was solid throughout the tourney, carding a final-round 83, despite the tough conditions to finish tied for 24th. I thought Lisa (Bailey) performed well under very difficult conditions this week, head coach Pam Tyska said. She was a consistent performer at one of the biggest events of our season. Her progression throughout the season is encouraging and we expect big things from Lisa throughout her career. Sophomore Jackie Bailey was second among NIU players despite a final-round 89. In recording a three-day total of 252, Bailey finished tied for 29th. Fellow sophomore Jackie Heslop finished third on the team with a three-day total of 257. One of two vastly improved NIU golfers from the second round, Heslop cut seven shots off her Saturday score of 91 to finish the tourney with an 84. An even better improvement was made by Irish Whalen. Whalen cut 10 stokes off her second-round 92 to finish with the best round of any Huskie on Sunday. Whalen finished the event tied for 40th after a final-round 82. Jamie Carney finished with a three-round total of 265 to finish fifth among NIU scorers. I was happy with the way our team finished todays round, head coach Pam Tyska said. We played the first part of the round in a pouring rain and struggled through that. But we did finish well and that is encouraging for the future of the program. We didnt have a senior on the roster and we have some talented players coming in next season to join them.
