DEKALB, Ill. -The Northern Illinois University women's golf team travels to Nashport, Ohio to open play in the 2013 Mid-American Conference Championships at the Longaberger Golf Club Friday.
“The team has seen the course before, so that’s a good thing,” said NIU head coach Kim Kester. “We’re excited to get there, do well and end on a high note.”
Opened in 1999, Longaberger has been named the No. 1 public golf course in the state of Ohio from 2002-12 by Golf Week magazine. The MAC's 45 golfers will play a course that is 6,075 yards long and plays a par of 72. Northern Illinois will be playing with Ball State and Eastern Michigan Friday with the first group teeing off at 8:30 a.m. CT.
Live scoring will be available and results will be posted to NIUHuskies.com at the conclusion of play each day. Weather will not be a factor as the forecast calls for clear skies and temps in the mid to upper 60s all weekend long.
Allie Parthie (Marinette, Wis./Marinette) and Jenny Niemiec (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) lead the way for the Huskies. Parthie is averaging a team-best 79.1, while Niemiec, who is shooting 81.3 on the season, has finished in the top 20 in all four tournaments this spring, including an eighth-place finish at the Falcon Invitational.
“Everyone is having a good year, but Jenny has stepped up,” Kester said. “All her hard work has paid off. Allie, being the lone senior, has really stepped it up when it counts. I look for her to have a successful MAC Championship.”
Parthie, a senior, has the most experience at Longaberger than any Huskie playing seven rounds at the course during her career, averaging 81. She turned in her best performance at Longaberger earlier this season at the 2012 MAC Preview where she shot a first round 76 and final round 77, her two lowest scores at the course. Parthie shot a 246 (83-82-81) at the 2011 MAC Championships held at Longaberger.
Freshman Connie Ellett
(Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire), who is averaging an 80.3 in 16 rounds of golf this season. She shot a 161 (81-80) at the 2012 MAC Preview and has three top 10 finishes on the season. Taylor Ellett
(Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire), who will be the first Huskie to tee off Friday, is averaging 82.1
Casey LaBarbera (Marinette, Wis./Marinette) rounds out the Huskie competitors. She is averaging 83.3 on the season and turned in her best finish of the season at the IPFW Spring Classic where she finished 13th and shot a season-low 157 including a season-best 77 in the final round of play.
