HUSKIES CLOSE OUT SEASON WITH NINTH-PLACE FINISH AT MAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
CINCINNATI, OH -- The Northern Illinois University women's golf team closed out the 2002-2003 season with a ninth-place finish at the Mid-American Conference Championships here at the Walden Ponds Golf Club. The Huskies finished the three-day, 54-hole event with a 1056 (340-354-362).

The Huskies were led by freshman Jackie Bailey (Decatur / Warrensburg-Latham), who rode a wave of consistency to a 253 (84-85-84). Bailey finishes her rookie campaign with an 83.6 strokes per circuit average.

"Jackie finished an excellent year in consistent fashion," Huskie boss Pam Tyska stated. "Her performance is definitely a highlight to carry us into next year."

While Bailey begins her career at NIU with an admirable freshman campaign, senior Janelle Warrick (Neenah, WI) finished out her four-year career at Northern Illinois with a 258 (86-81-91). Warrick led the Huskies this season with a team-leading 83.5 strokes per round average.

"Janelle ended a stellar career today," Tyska added. "The score on the scoreboard definitely doesn't reflect how brightly that star has shined."

Junior Irish Whalen (Hanover / River Ridge) scored a career-best 82 in the first round, before cooling to finish at 269 (82-95-92). Ally Williams (Hoffman Estates / Palatine Fremd) finished her first MAC event with a 277 (88-93-96), while fellow newcomer Lynzee Gumm (Galesburg) tallied a 283 (93-95-95).

Kent State University garnered their fifth consecutive Mid-American Conference title by 37 strokes over Eastern Michigan University. All five Golden Flash golfers finished in the top ten as Veronique Drouin earned medalist honors shooting a 219. Drouin ended teammate Martina Gillen's bid at a MAC three-peat (she earned medalist honors in 2001 and 2002), edging her by four strokes. Gillen finished second.

The future looks bright for the Huskies as only Warrick graduates this May.

"We'll be back next season with some new faces," Tyska stated. "It's the beginning of a new frontier."
