DEKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois University women's golf team opens its 2012-13 season in Green Bay, Wis. when the Huskies compete in the Green Bay Fall Invitational at the Green Bay Country Club Monday.
Senior Allie Parthie (Marinette, Wis./Marinette) will provide the veteran leadership the team needs this weekend, and throughout the season. She posted a team-best 79.3 scoring average last year, the only Huskie checking in with a sub 80 average. The senior turned in seven top-10 finishes last season, including a seventh-place finish in Green Bay. She will be one of the favorites at the season opener.
"She's someone who wants to do whatever it takes to do better," first year head coach Kim Kester said. "That's what you like to see as a coach, someone who's making that extra effort. It's going to rub off on the younger kids."
With five freshmen on the roster, Kester's squad is young. Newcomer Connie Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire), the sister of sophomore Taylor Ellett, has stepped up and will make her debut with the Huskies Monday.
"It's young - five freshmen," Kester said of the Huskies' squad. "One freshman, Connie, will be in the lineup. It's always good to see a freshman come in and make an impact right away."
No matter the result, the Green Bay Invitational will be a gauge for the Huskies and Kester, on where the team is headed this year. Still, NIU has its sights set high after finishing fourth at Green Bay Country Club a year ago.
"We've been playing Rich Harvest Farms, so it's setting us up extremely well for any course we'll play in this fall," she said. "They've been prepared, and half the battle is preparing the right way."
Northern Illinois boasts four golfers from the Dairy State. In addition to Parthie, sophomores Allison Van Heuklom (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) and Casey LaBarbera (Marinette, Wis./Marinette) and freshman Peyton Gunnison (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) hail from Wisconsin. The three veterans of the quartet are very familiar with the course, as all have played it in the past.
