HESLOP, NORTHERN ILLINOIS WOMEN’S GOLF TEAM SECOND AT WESTERN ILLINOIS WESTERWIND CLASSIC

MACOMB, IL -- Jackie Heslop (Pequot Lakes, MN) fired an opening-round 5-over-par 77 to finish the day tied for second and lead the Northern Illinois University women’s golf team to second after the first round of action at the Westerwind Classic (Sept. 12) hosted by Western Illinois University in Macomb, IL.

Western Illinois (324) leads the nine-team tournament by four shots over NIU, who shot a team total of 328 this afternoon. Western Illinois’ Janelle Bush leads the 36-hole tournament by five shots after firing an even-par 72. Heslop and Eastern Illinois University golfer Amanda Minchin trail Bush by five shots after each shot an opening-round 77.

After firing a career-best 76 a week ago at Illinois State, Heslop continues her recent hot streak with her performance today. Last week, the sophomore finished second among NIU golfers and 41st overall leading up to today’s round.

“Jackie has been golfing well lately,” head coach Pam Tyska said. “She’s a confident golfer and that makes all the difference. She’ll be right in the mix tomorrow and it should be a lot of fun.”

Also in the mix come Saturday will be Irish Whalen (Hanover/River Ridge) and freshman Lisa Bailey (Decatur/Warrensburg-Latham), who also find themselves in the top 10. Whalen, currently tied for sixth after an opening-round 81, led NIU last week at Illinois State, while the freshman Bailey is making just her second collegiate appearance and kicked off the tournament with an 84.

Jackie Bailey (Decatur/Warrensburg-Latham) and Jamie Carney (Rolling Meadows) were the fourth and fifth finishers for the Huskies. Bailey is tied for 18th after shooting an 86, while Carney is tied for 37th with a 92. Rounding out the scoring for the Huskies was Allison Williams (Hoffman Estates/Palatine Fremd) who shot 105.

Northern Illinois also had four team members compete as individuals compete in the field. Sophomore Lynzee Gumm (Galesburg/Galesburg) led the way by finishing the day 36th after a round of 91.

Northern Illinois will conclude action at the Western Illinois Westerwind Classic on Saturday with the final 18 holes teeing off at 8:30 a.m.
