DEKALB, Ill.-The Northern Illinois University women's golf team tees off its 2008-09 season Sunday, when the Huskies head down to Macomb, Ill. for the Western Illinois Invitational at Harry Mussatto Golf Course.

Last season, the Huskies took second at the Western Illinois Invite, just one stroke off the lead finishing with a two-round total of 627. Senior Abbie Many (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) was the medalist, shooting a 150 (74-76).

This year, Northern will look to build on a successful 2007-08 campaign that saw the Huskies win two events, post six top-ten finishes and two medalists. That task will be made a bit easier with the return of NIU's top player from last season, junior Kim Hunley (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora).

In 2007-08, Hunley was the Huskies' top finisher in five of the Huskies six spring events. She was the medalist at the NIU Snowbird Intercollegiate, shooting a 147 (72-75), and her first-round 72 was a career low for Hunley.

"Kim had a great summer," NIU head coach Pam Tyska said. "She posted some great scores both in competition and practice. She's coming in low for us. She's going to be No. 1 going into Western Illinois. She's really playing solid.

"When she's errant on her shots, it's not a situation where she's so far out of place she's going to be penalized or she doesn't have the skills to get right back to where she needs to be."

NIU will also have the benefit of senior leadership with Ashley Lods (Monticello, Ind./Twin Lakes) and Nicci Shultz (Somonauk, Ill./Somonauk) returning for their final seasons. They will play in the No. 3 and No. 4 spots respectively. The Huskies welcomed a new member to the squad during the summer. Michelle Caporusso (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) transferred to NIU from Michigan State and will be playing in the No. 2 slot.

"She's been playing very well," Tyska said. "She's really comfortable here at Northern. She fits in very well with the team and her game is real smooth and real easy."

Tee time for the Western Illinois Invitational is set for 9 a.m. depending on weather and course conditions.
