DEKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois women's golf team travels to Chicago to compete in the Cougar Classic at Harborside International Golf Center Monday.
The Huskies are looking to rebound from last weekend's 13th place finish at the Redbird Invitational. NIU will compete in a 13-team field including Cleveland State, Creighton, Dayton, Detroit, Eastern Illinois, Green Bay, Indiana State, Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, Loyola, University of Texas-Pan America, University of Illinois Chicago, and host Chicago State.
"We're playing a new course this week that is set up well for us," said NIU head coach Kim Kester. "The ladies worked hard on their games this week. We're looking for improvement this week from our season opening performance."
Freshman Sydney Brickey (Burtchville, Mich./Shattuck-St. Mary's) had a solid debut in her first collegiate appearance, shooting a 237, averaging 79 a round and placing 44th overall. Senior Jenny Niemiec (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) also had a strong showing by moving up nine spots after posting a final round of 79 and finishing in 60th overall.
Sophomore Samantha Coyne (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) also stood out finishing 55th overall as an individual with a career low of 77 in her first round of play.
NIU finished fifth in last year's Cougar Golf Classic, hosted by Chicago State University, after coming up just seven strokes behind the 2012 winner, Indiana State University.
Harborside International, opened in 1995 and run by KemperSports Management, features two par 72 18-hole courses (Port and Starboard). The Port section of the course has a total yardage of 7,164 and the Starboard course presents a total yardage of 7,166.
