Sept. 30, 2011

DEKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois University women's golf team welcomes 11 teams to Kishwaukee Country Club for the 27th annual NIU Huskie Classic Sunday. The event begins at 9:30 a.m. Central Time.

"We are so pleased and proud to start yet another new chapter in the Huskie Golf record books in returning the NIU Huskie Classic to Kishwaukee Country Club in DeKalb," said NIU head coach Pam Tyska. "The staff and membership is wonderfully supportive of NIU Golf."

The NIU Huskie Classic returns to Kishwaukee Country Club for the first time since 1989. The event began at KCC in 1984 and has been played at the Oak Club in Genoa for 12 years and most recently at Whisper Creek Golf Course in Huntley from 2001-2010.

The field, which consists of NIU, Chicago State, Creighton, Detroit Mercy, IPFW, Loyola, Maryville, Missouri-St. Louis, North Dakota, UIC, South Dakota and SIU-Edwardsville, will play on the 6,100-yard par 73 course at Kishwaukee. The Huskies have competed against seven of the 11 teams making the trip to DeKalb in the previous three tournaments this fall.

Northern Illinois enters play on its home course looking to improve on a fifth-place finish at the SIUE Intercollegiate earlier this week. Pacing the Huskies once again was Allie Parthie (Marinette, Wis./Marinette). A junior, Parthie posted her third top-five finish of the fall carding a 158 (82-76) to place third. Her highest finish of the season to date, she also took seventh at the Green Bay Invitational and tied for fifth at the Cardinal Classic. She is averaging a team-best 77.7 a round.

Senior Katie Kuhn (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Hinsdale), who is averaging 83 this fall, is looking to rebound from a 176 (87-89) at the SIUE Intercollegiate. Freshman Taylor Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire), who is coming off her first career top-10 finish, is averaging 83.2 through three events. She finished the SIUE Intercollegiate with a 166 (85-81) to finish in eighth place.

"Allie is coming off two great performances the last two tournaments, a fifth-place finish at Ball State and third at SIU-Edwardsville," Tyska said. "She has posted some of our lowest qualifying scores to date at Kishwaukee CC. Taylor Ellett will be in the second position after a solid finishing round at our last event in Edwardsville."

The Huskies posted a school record 296 in the first round of the Huskie Classic last season at Whisper Creek. The Huskies were edged out by Brown University, 611 to 614, for a second-place finish. Northern Illinois won the event in 2009, with Kim Hunley leading the way with a 152 and a first-place finish.

The 2011-12 NIU women's golf team features a pair of second generation Huskies. Ellett is the daughter of Sue (Sisler) Ellett, while fellow freshman Casey LaBarbera (Marinette, Wis./Marinette) is the daughter on NIU golf alumnae Justine (Wallaway) Braatz. Both Sisler and Wallaway were successful golfers for NIU in the 1980s.
