Northern Illinois University Women's Golf Wins 23rd Annual Huskie Classic

DeKALB, Ill.-- The Northern Illinois University women's golf team took home the victory at the 23rd Annual Huskie Classic, defeating Oakland University by six strokes at Whisper Creek in Huntley, Ill. Tuesday. The Huskies shot a combined 623, edging out Oakland's 629. "Our star performers weren't so stellar, but they really gutted it out today," NIU head coach Pam Tyska said. "Never say never, because you just never know when your score is going to count. We really fought and showed some tenacity. We had a great tournament." Jessica Parmenter (Peoria, Ill./Peoria Christian) was the top finisher for the Huskies, posting a final-round 80 for a combined 154, tying for second place with Lauren Oh of Loyola. Senior Abbie Many (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) finished a stroke behind Parmenter, tying for fourth place with Loyola's Kaitlin Kearney. Many also shot a final-round 80 for a two-day total of 155. Sophomore Kim Hunley (Aurora, Ill./ West Aurora) moved up two spots after Tuesday's play, finishing in a tie for sixth after posting a 78 on the final day for a two-day total of 156. Devon Hartneck (Rochester, Minn./Lincoln) and Nicci Schultz (Somonauk, Ill./Somonauk), who were playing as individuals, round out the top 10. Ashley Lods (Monticello, Ind./Twin Lakes) and Kim Bailey (Gibson City, Ill./Gibson City-Melvin Sibley) each posted a two-day total of 163 to finish in a tie for 16th place. Lods rebounded from yesterday's 85 to post a final-round 78, tying with Hunley for the best second-round score. Huskie golfers were not the only ones earning recognition for their performance in the tournament. NIU head coach Pam Tyska was voted Huskie Classic Coach of the Tournament by the other five coaches.
The team leader board remained unchanged from first round play. Loyola University finished in third after posting a 632, followed by Detroit (653), Western Illinois (658) and Wisconsin-Green Bay (770). The Huskies will be back in action Monday Oct. 8 at Legends Golf Course in Franklin, Ind. with a 7 a.m. Central tee time. Team Scores Top-10 Individual Scores *-Played as individuals |
