WINDY CONDITIONS CHALLENGE COMPETITORS IN FIRST ROUND OF 18TH ANNUAL HUSKIE CLASSIC

HUNTLEY, IL --- In "Tin Cup" a gust of wind was a gift from the gods for Roy McAvoy. However, for the Northern Illinois University women's golf team and the rest of the field at the 18th Annual Huskie Classic, the gusting winds could not be considered a gift. With winds ranging between 30-40 miles per hour, NIU finished Sunday's (Oct. 6) first round at 361, in eighth-place.

Irish Whalen (Hanover / River Ridge) braved the conditions and led the Huskie team with an 88. Following Whalen's lead was the squad's lone senior Janelle Warrick (Neenah, WI), carding a round of 90.

Freshman Jackie Bailey (Decatur / Warrenburg-Latham) scored a 91 in the first round, while fellow rookie Jackie Helsop (Pequat Lakes, MN) fired a 92. Classmate Lynzee Gumm (Galesburg) finished the day at 98.

Individual scores not counting towards the team score included freshman Jamie Carney (Rolling Meadows) scored the best round by a Northern Illinois player, carding an 87. Carney's 87 was a career-best round, as she is competing in only the second event of her young career.

Roberta Massuch (Watertown, WI) made her debut with a 96 on the day and freshman Ally Williams (Hoffman Estates / Palatine Fremd) carded a 101 in the first round.

Western Michigan paced the field, placing its top four competitors in the top-10. The Broncos first round 320 was 17 strokes better than Ball State. UC-Riverside was just one stroke behind Ball State in third. On the individual side, Erica Bleniek of Western Michigan carded an even-par 72, tying the event record. Only four players scored 80 or lower. Bleniek has a six-stroke lead over Le-Anh Nguyen of UC-Riverside. Dartmouth College's Kathy Birchall is another stroke back in third-place.

The Northern Illinois University women's golf team closes out the fall portion of the schedule Monday (Oct. 7) with the final round of the 18th annual Huskie Classic, which tees off at 8 a.m.
