DEKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois University women's golf team travels to Fishers, Ind. this weekend to compete in The 2013 Preview at The Hawthorns Golf Club Monday.
NIU is part of a field consisting of 15 other schools including Ball State, Eastern Michigan, Marshall, Akron, Eastern Kentucky, Valparaiso, Bowling Green, Toledo, IUPUI, IPFW, Oakland, Cleveland State, Western Illinois, Ohio and Western Michigan.
NIU looks to build on its performance at the Kangaroo Fall Invitational hosted by UMKC last week. The Huskies turned in their three lowest scores of the fall, shooting a 308, 311 and 313 in the first, second and final rounds respectively. NIU posted a season-best fourth place finish, shooting a 932, the fifth lowest total score in school history for a 54-hole event.
"We played well last tournament," said NIU head coach Kim Kester. "Hopefully we can put together a full tournament this week. We didn't do as well on our finishing holes as I would have liked. We hope to do a better job of closing out this tournament."
Junior Casey LaBarbera (Marinette, Wis./Marinette) had her best finish of the fall season finishing 13th and also posting a career low round of 74. Freshman Sydney Brickey (Burtchville, Mich./Shattuck-St. Mary's) also had a top-20 finish, shooting her career low 75 in the final round, to bring her season average to a team best 79.
The UMKC Invite was a dramatic improvement from NIU's first 54-hole event of the season where the Huskies shot a 959 at the Redbird Invitational. Kester feels this tournament sets up well for her squad.
"Only two girls in the line up have seen the course before," she said. "It's kind of a fresh start for a lot of the girls. It's a good course. I like the set up of the course. I think it sets up for us pretty well."
Tee time for Monday's first round is set for 8:30 a.m. CT with final round play scheduled for 8:30 a.m. CT on Tuesday.
