GOLF ENDS FALL SEASON BY CUTTING 20 STROKES IN FINAL
ROUND OF HUSKIE CLASSIC Western Michigan captured the team, title firing rounds of 320 and 316 for a two-day 638. The Broncos' Erica Bieniek took home medalist honors for her 36-hole score of 149 (72-77). Eastern Illinois' Tyra Frederick set an 18-hole tournament record with her 70 in the second round while the Panthers posted an 18-hole team record with their 306 during the second day. Shannon Rodgers from Dartmouth scored a hole-in-one on the par-3 16th hole. Northern Illinois' annual fall event has become a favorite of senior Janelle Warrick (Neehan, WI). At last year's outing, she carded a career-best 75 during the first round, while during the second 18 holes this season she posted a 77. The Wisconsin native led all Huskies with a two-day total of 167 (90-77). The low scorer for Northern Illinois during the first round, Jamie Carney (Rolling Meadows), competed as an individual and did not factor into the team standing, but the Huskies could have used her play as she came back with an 84 to post a two-day 171 (87-84). One shot back of Carney was sophomore Irish Whalen (Hanover / River Ridge) as her career-low 84 during the second loop led to a career-best 36-hole score of 172 (88-84). A pair of Northern Illinois rookies had a strong showing as Jackie Bailey (Decatur / Warrensburg-Latham) carded a 178 (91-87) and Jackie Heslop ( Pequat Lakes, MN) was next on the team with a 186 (92-94). Finishing the Huskie team scoring was freshman Lynzee Gumm (Galesburg) as she cut five strokes off her Sunday total for a 191 (98-93). The biggest improvement during the two-day tournament came from rookie Ally Williams (Hoffman Estates / Palatine Fremd). Competing as an individual, Williams carded a 101 in the first round, but bounced back for an 86 during the second loop. Also participating as an individual was Roberta Massuch (Watertown, WI), who tallied a 189 (96-93). Northern Illinois is finished for the fall season with their next action coming on March 7, 2002, when it plays host to the Fifth Annual NIU Springlake Classic at the Springlake Country Club in Sebring, FL. -Copy by Michael Smoose -30-
