DEKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois University women's golf team wraps up its fall season at The 2012 Mid-American Conference Preview at the Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio.
In addition to the Huskies, the 14-team field will include conference foes Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Toledo and Western Michigan as well as non-conference teams Bucknell, Butler, Chicago State, Cleveland State, Dayton, Detroit and Youngstown State. NIU head coach Kim Kester is looking to see the Huskies finish the fall season on a high note and how they stack up against the rest of the league.
"It's the last tournament of the fall and we'd like to go out with a bang," Kester said. "We're seeing the majority of the MAC schools which is good. I want to see them play the game they're capable of."
NIU comes into Monday's action off a seventh-place finish, the team's third top-10 finish in as many tournaments this season, at the Cardinal Classic. Leading the way for Northern Illinois this fall is senior Allie Parthie (Marinette, Wis./Marinette), averaging a 79.5. Freshmen Connie Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) is right behind her with an 80.2.
"Allie hasn't been hitting for the past two weeks because of her wrist injury. Hopefully she's feeling better, and finishes the fall out with a strong performance," she said. "Connie grinds it out. For a freshman, and really any player, you like to see them battle it out til the end and that's what she does. She doesn't give up and she'll play til the end. She's only had one bad round in the fall and she rebounded extremely well from that."
Opened in 1999, Longaberger has been named the No. 1 public golf course in the state of Ohio from 2002-12 by Golf Week magazine. The course is 7,243 yards and plays a par of 72. NIU will have a shotgun start at 8 a.m. (CT) and play 18 holes on Monday and Tuesday. Results will be posted to NIUHuskies.com at the conclusion of play.
