DeKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois gymnasts claimed individual titles in three of the four events, but lost its season-opening meet to Illinois-Chicago at the NIU Convocation Center, 191.575-188.350 Sunday in half of the inaugural "Beauty and the Beast" meet.

Competing alongside the NIU wrestling team and under new head coach Sam Morreale for the first time, the Huskies fell to 0-1 on the year.

NIU senior Tanya Rachan won the balance beam and floor exercise with scores of 9.650 and 9.800, respectively, while senior Shonda Clore claimed the win on uneven parallel bars with a 9.800. However, the Huskies did not get the solid performances across the board that Morreale had seen in practices leading up to the meet.

"In warmups and leading up to the competition, we seemed pretty confident and aggressive with our touches and everything else," said Morreale about his first match at the helm. "But once the competition itself started, we got a little tight, whether that was first meet nerves or just flukes, that's not who we are as a team and I told the girls that after the competition. We want to be the team that we practice like.

"We have some solid kids on the roster, we have depth - we have all the things that it takes to do things well - we just can't have as many misses. At the end of the day, we just have to go out there and do the job."

Northern Illinois opened strong with a 47.850 on vault with five solid scores, including a 9.675 by sophomore Kim Gotlund, who tied for second on the event. Gotlund, the Huskies' lone all-arounder, finished the meet with a score of 36.300 in the first all-around competition of her career. In addition to the 9.675 on vault, she earned a 9.750 on floor exercise.

Clore earned a 9.600 on vault and Natalie Sutter added a 9.650 on bars to highlight the rest of NIU's day.

The Huskies' next meet is next Friday, Jan. 13 at Southeast Missouri State.
