DeKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois sophomore gymnast Ashley Guerra earned the first Mid-American Conference weekly honor of her career, and the first by an NIU gymnast this season, as she was named the MAC Specialist of the Week Tuesday.

In the Huskies' season-opening meet versus Wisconsin-La Crosse last Sunday at the NIU Convocation Center, Guerra won the uneven bars competition with a score of 9.725 and took second place on balance beam with a mark of 9.625. She picked up her first ever collegiate win on an event in the bars while her beam score was also her top finish on that event.

"Ashley came in last year as a freshman and did an outstanding job on bars and she has worked so hard on beam to get to that same level," said NIU Head Coach Mark Sontag. "It was great to see her get out there and show what she can do. She is pushing for the top spot in the line-up in two events now and I'm happy for her to get this recognition as a sophomore."

Guerra became the fourth Huskie student-athlete to earn a player of the week award from the MAC this week as she joins Xavier Silas (Men's Basketball), Marke Freeman (Women's Basketball) and Rhonda Lee (Women's Indoor Track) with weekly honors. Northern Illinois student-athletes were honored by the league in every sport in which the Huskies competed last week.

Guerra and her Huskie gymnastics teammates claimed a 188.450-174.300 victory over Wisconsin-La Crosse at the NIU Convocation Center on Sunday and are 1-0 on the 2010 season.

Northern Illinois opens its Mid-American Conference competition this Sunday, Jan. 17 versus Western Michigan. The meet begins at 2 p.m. in Victor E. Court and tickets are available at the door for $5 for adults and $3 for youth and seniors. NIU students are admitted free with a valid OneCard. In addition, Huskie fans who bring a ticket stub from Saturday's men's basketball game to Sunday's meet will pay just $1 to see Sunday's gymnastics action.
