NEXT HUSKIE MEET: Sunday / Feb. 29 --- NIU at Bowling Green St., University, Bowling Green, OH, 1 p.m.

DeKALB, IL---According to the old adage, "two out of three ain't bad." But it wasn't quite good enough for the Northern Illinois University gymnastics squad Sunday (Feb. 22) as the one that got away turned out to be Mid-American Conference rival Central Michigan University. The Chippewas compiled a 194.425 total, just ahead of NIU's 194.150 finish.

Northern Illinois claimed a pair of victories, outpointing Division II entries University of Alaska (189.775) and Winona State University (182.150) to improve to 4-5 on the season. But the Huskies dropped to 2-3 in MAC action despite surpassing the 194 mark for the fourth time in their last five meets.

CMU's Sara Burtinsky captured top individual honors with a 39.350 all-around tally, just ahead of NIU junior Kristina Campos (39.250). Campos (Oak Park, MO / Gladstone) surpassed the 39 mark for the fifth time this year and the 11th of her career, while senior teammate Tiffany Nolen (Woodstock, GA / Sequoyah) was third with a 38.900 composite in her final home meet.

The balance beam and floor exercise were the difference for CMU, with the Chippewas' Burtinsky claiming the bars crown following her 9.900 effort. Teammate Stephanie Langley and UAA's Brianna Thomas shared second spot at 9.800, just ahead of Campos' 9.775 performance. Central Michigan's 49.000 team score provided sufficient cushion, a 0.575 margin over NIU's 48.425 tally.

On the floor, it was Central Michigan's Kara Reighard atop the winner's podium after posting a 9.900 which edged Campos by 0.025 points. Burtinshky and CMU's Mattie Crawford shared third place with matching 9.850 routines, leading CMU to a 49.175 team total on that event.

Burtinsky and Crawford also shared the vaulting title at 9.900, just ahead of NIU's Kelly Kramer (Long Lake, MN / Jefferson). The Huskie freshman tied Langley for third place with her season-high 9.875 performance with Campos placing fifth at 9.825.

The highlight for NIU came on the uneven bars as Dannielle Dacey (Saskatoon, Sask. / Marian M. Graham) won top honors at 9.800. That was 0.025 points ahead of a trio of teammates with Campos, Nolen and sophomore Ashlee Williams (Liberty, MO) sharing second spot at 9.775 while Central Michigan's Reighard was fifth with a 9.750 showing.

Northern Illinois wraps up conference action next Sunday (Feb. 29) with a 2 p.m. dual at Bowling Green St. University. Central Michigan hosts the MAC championship meet March 19.
