MOUNT PLEASANT, MI---In the face of adversity, competitors can either stay and fight or run away. The Northern Illinois University women's gymnastics team took the first option Sunday (Feb. 23), taking on Mid-American Conference power Central Michigan University.

The host Chippewas notched a 194.825 score to drop the Huskies to 1-2 in MAC action, although the shorthanded Huskies rallied to surpass the 192 mark for the fourth consecutive meet. Three of those efforts have come on the road, including Sunday's 193.500 performance. Northern Illinois salvaged a split to move to 6-8 overall, as the University of Pittsburgh finished third at 192.725.

Sophomore Kristina Campos (Gladstone, MO / Oak Park) earned all-around honors with her 39.300 total, the second-best score in Huskie history. Only Sandy Menard's 39.400 composite at the Midwest Independent Gymnastics Championships (March 24, 1995) stands above Campos' performance on the all-time NIU charts.

Campos took second place on the vault with her 9.775 effort and added second-place honors with her 9.825 on the balance beam plus third-place honors with a 9.875 on the floor. Her lowest event finish (fifth) came on bars, where she garnered a 9.825 which is the highest by a Northern Illinois gymnast this season.

"Kristina was right on in all four events today," Huskie coach Mark Sontag proclaimed. "Everything she did was right on the mark. She had some of the best routines I've seen in my two years of coaching her. It was just a great day for her."

"This was a great meet for us, and really helps us in terms of regional qualifying average," Sontag said. "We were without Anna Gardina but we had people step up in a big way. Mariah Howard (Hales Corners, WI / Whitnall) did a nice job on balance beam and Laura Hale (Plymouth, MN / Wayzata) did well on the floor. That really helped us absorb Anna's loss."

Howard earned a 9.650 on the beam, eclipsing her previous season-best by six-tenths of a point, while Hale's 9.775 on the floor was .05 better than her previous 2003 high.

Central Michigan's Katie Teft stole the spotlight with a perfect 10.000 to win the bars competition, while teammates Shanna Duggan and Michele Orloski claimed blue ribbons on beam and floor, respectively. Duggan edged Campos with her 9.850 routine and Orloski tied Pittsburgh's Musulin Launse atop the podium when she earned a 9.900 to slip past Campos. UP's Alyse Zeffiro was the vault champion, scoring 9.800---again, just 0.025 ahead of the NIU sophomore.

The Huskies posted a 49.000 team score on the floor exercise, the fifth-best showing in program history. NIU's 49.100 rate on that event versus Bowling Green St. University earlier this spring (Feb. 9) was just one-tenth of a point off the school standard set versus Southeast Missouri State University on March 11, 2001.

The Huskies return to MAC competition next Sunday (Mar. 2), when Kent State University comes to the Convocation Center for a 2 p.m. meet.
