"Be Proud Be NIU". The slogan says it all.
There was a lot to celebrate in 2012-13 as the football team claimed its second-consecutive Mid-American Conference Championship, volleyball and baseball claimed MAC West Division Championships and four of NIU's teams: football, men's soccer, men's tennis and volleyball, all advanced to conference championship finals. The Huskie football team also made history when it was chosen to play in the Discover Orange Bowl against Florida State on New Year's Day.
It would be easy to look back at those accomplishments, be content and easily rest upon those laurels, but that would not be proud, that would be shameful. That's not NIU. We want to have pride in what we accomplished while also striving to be better at what we do.
Northern Illinois Athletics launched its "Be Proud Be NIU" campaign in April 2013 to celebrate its past, but also to advance the department to where it wants to go in the future.
Who better to show NIU pride in its teams than coaches who were Huskies themselves? NIUHuskies.com will feature four of its coaches who were former Huskie athletes and allow them to discuss their pride in Northern Illinois Athletics.
This week, NIUHuskies.com features former Huskie gymnast Sam Morreale. Morreale competed on the men’s gymnastics team at NIU, captaining the squad in 1986-87. He was an assistant coach with the Huskie women’s gymnastics team for nine years and was named head coach in June of 2011.
