DeKalb, Ill. The Northern Illinois gymnastics team has continued to set the standards and raise the bar both in the gym and in the classroom.
The NIU women's gymnastics team posted an overall team GPA of 3.49 leading to a No. 15 ranking by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W). The Huskies posted the second highest team GPA among Mid-American Conference gymnastics teams, behind only Western Michigan.
"As a coach, I feel like we came together academically last season and put in a ton of work in the classroom," said NIU head coach Sam Morreale. "To be the second-ranked MAC team is a great accomplishment because there are five teams from our league in the Top 25."
The Huskies, ranked 15th out of 67 institutions with an overall team GPA of 3.4956, had nine women's gymnasts named to the NACGC/W All-Academic Team. Leading the way was All-MAC selection Kim Gotlund (Wadsworth, IL) carrying a 4.0 GPA, followed by Kelly Nortz (Bay Village, OH) with a 3.87.
Former Huskies, Elizabeth Huffman (Dunlap, IL) and Natalie Sutter (Barberton, OH) both posted GPA's of 3.83, followed by Natalie Amadio (Lake Zurich, IL) with a 3.76. Nichole Fulton (Yellow Springs, OH) posted a 3.73 GPA, while Peyton Taylor (Bloomington, IL) compiled a 3.63 mark. Huskies Amanda Stepp (Lapeer, MI), with a 3.6, and Morgan Johnson (Elburn, IL), 3.54, also earned All-Academic Team Honors.
"The number of gymnasts on the All-Academic team speaks to the value we put on academics on our team," said Morreale. "I'm very proud of the work that they've done both in the gym and in the classroom and it's great to see that get recognized with these rankings."
