ORLANDO, Fla. - For the second time is as many exhibition matches, the Northern Illinois women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw, this time at UCF. The Huskies completed their two game preseason schedule 0-0-2.
"This was another good battle and an opportunity for us to get better against a completely different style team," said associate head coach Paul Jobson. "UCF is more of a finesse team that likes to keep possession on the ground and I thought we did a good job continuing to play our style against them."
UCF got on the board first at 5:42 into the match. Huskie goalkeeper Lindsay Curnock (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) turned aside a shot by Becca Thomas but the rebound went to Danielle Dos Santos who put the shot in the net to make it 1-0.
Less than 10 minutes later, NIU's Thea Johnson (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) stepped around a Knight defender and buried a 15-yard shot past the UCF keeper to knot that game at one.
The two teams played a defensive battle in the second with the Huskies holding a 12-4 shots advantage. For the game, NIU outshot the Knights 20-8.
"I feel really good about where we are after these two exhibition matches," said Jobson. "We've had a great week and a half of practice and bonded as a team on this trip to Florida. We were able to face two teams that played two entirely different styles and it gave us the opportunity to see where we are and where we have room to improve."
The Huskies now turn their attention to the regular season, which begins on Friday, Aug. 31 with a home match against IUPUI as part of the weekend's NIU Tournament in DeKalb. Prior to NIU's match on Friday, Navy faces Iowa. The Huskies will then meet the Hawkeyes on Sunday, Sept. 2.
