DeKALB, Ill. - A perfectly executed header by Maddie Lehman (St. Charles, Ill./North) off a corner kick from Lisa Maier (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) in the game's 98th minute lifted Northern Illinois to a 1-0 overtime victory over Wisconsin-Green Bay Friday afternoon. The win moves NIU to 2-0-1 on the season while UWGB drops to 0-3-0.
Lehman's second career marker came at 98:31 after the teams played to a scoreless deadlock during regulation time.
"This is Maddie's third year here and throughout that time we have worked on this play," said associate head coach Paul Jobson. "Lisa [Maier] sent a perfect ball in from the corner and Maddie was able to execute perfectly. It's a play we have worked on in practice every day."
The Huskies had several opportunities to score late in regulation, including a shot that went high with less than a minute remaining in the second half. NIU outshot the Phoenix 16-3 in the contest and led 5-2 in shots on goal.
"We are battling team," said Jobson. "We have a never-say-die attitude and we did what we needed to do to get a win against a good opponent today."
Goalkeeper Lindsey Curnock (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) made two saves for her second shutout victory of the year. The sophomore recorded her ninth career shutout to take over sole possession of second place on the NIU career list.
The Huskies have totaled 298:31 without allowing a goal this season in their three matches and own a five-match home unbeaten streak dating back to 2006.
NIU is back in action Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. against Western Illinois at the Huskie Soccer Field.
