DeKALB, Ill. - Western Illinois used a free kick to score the only goal of Sunday's match for a 1-0 victory over Northern Illinois. The Huskies suffered their first loss of 2007 and are now 2-1-1 while WIU improved to 3-1-0.

"We have got to be able to score when we have chances," said associate head coach Paul Jobson. "We played very well defensively but had a couple of miscues on their free kick. Western is a good team, but we were not able to capitalize when we had opportunities today. I'm proud of our team and their effort."

The Westerwinds took the lead 1-0 at 33:27 on a goal off an unassisted free kick by Bess Rapp. WIU's goal ended the Huskies streak of 331:58 without allowing a score to start the season.

The Huskies won the statistical battle, leading 21-8 in shots.

WIU's victory was it first over NIU in three meetings.

The Huskies take to the road for a pair of matches in Chicago next weekend. NIU faces Loyola Friday night and DePaul on Sunday afternoon.
